Rich Froning Jr., widely considered the “Fittest Man in History” for his four consecutive individual CrossFit Games titles from 2011 to 2014, continues to train with remarkable intensity at 38 years old. Froning’s approach to training has evolved as he’s matured, transitioning from an almost reckless volume in his younger years to a more strategic, yet still incredibly high-volume, regimen. While he still maintains eye-watering training volume, his current method is characterized by reduced urgency and stress. He emphasizes “greasing the groove” and perfecting form, often working with lower loads and only pushing into maximal weights closer to competition.

Froning’s daily routine often involves multiple training sessions, sometimes two or three times a day, incorporating strength work, skill sessions, and metabolic conditioning. This high-volume approach allows him to build the stamina and awareness necessary to perform at peak levels without “redlining.” For Froning, working out hard is simply ingrained; he states, “If I’m going to be working out, I’m going to be working out hard.”

Adapting to Longevity

As he’s aged, Froning has become more attuned to his body, avoiding pushing through pain, especially in movements like Olympic lifts that can strain his knees. This self-awareness contributes to his longevity in a physically demanding sport. He also engages in diverse physical challenges beyond competitive CrossFit, such as mountain biking and hunting, to maintain a target for his training and keep things fresh.

Froning pays meticulous attention to his macronutrient intake, adjusting his carbohydrate consumption based on his training demands while keeping protein and fat relatively constant.

In the past, Froning experimented with intermittent fasting, often consuming his daily calories within an 8-hour window. However, he found it challenging to consume enough calories in that timeframe and has since shifted to spreading three meals throughout the day, with an optional snack before bed to ensure adequate caloric intake. He divides carbohydrates into “healthy carbs” (e.g., whole grains, fruits), “high GI carbs” (e.g., sugary cereals, white potatoes), and “workout carbs” (e.g., sports drinks) to strategically fuel his training.
