India’s fitness technology sector has recorded a significant slowdown in funding, raising only $7 million in the year-to-date period of 2025, according to Tracxn’s India Fitness Tech Wrap Report 2025. This figure reflects a sharp decline from its peak in 2021 and indicates a more cautious investment environment after a period of rapid growth.

Historical Context and Funding Trends

The current funding landscape for India’s fitness tech marks a notable shift from previous years. Over the last decade (2016–2025 YTD), annual funding experienced substantial growth, climbing from $24.2 million in 2016 to an unprecedented $387.9 million in 2021. However, this boom began to moderate in subsequent years, with funding settling at $48.3 million in 2024 before the pronounced dip in 2025. The total funding raised by the Indian fitness tech sector to date stands at $989 million across 203 equity rounds.

Key Players Driving the Ecosystem

Despite the overall funding slowdown, key players continue to dominate the Indian fitness tech landscape. Cult.fit remains the most heavily funded startup in the sector, having secured $666.6 million to date. It also accounts for all four mega-funding rounds exceeding $100 million in the sector’s history. Other significant recipients of funding include HealthifyMe, which has raised $145.3 million for its AI-driven nutrition and fitness coaching, and Ultrahuman, with $54.9 million for its biomarker-led health platform. FITTR has also garnered $19.9 million, showcasing the demand for app-based coaching and community-driven fitness, including a $3 million Series A round from Rainmatter in 2025 YTD.

The sector is robust, with an ecosystem of over 600 active startups, 96 of which have secured equity funding. Geographically, Bengaluru leads the funding landscape within the fitness tech sector, having secured $897.6 million in total funding to date, followed by Mumbai with $33.2 million.

Broader Indian Startup Funding Environment

The cautious approach from investors in the fitness tech sector mirrors a broader trend across the Indian startup ecosystem in 2025. Overall venture capital funding for Indian startups saw a significant decline, with July 2025 recording the lowest monthly funding at $621 million, a 42% year-on-year decrease. The first half of 2025 saw Indian tech startups raise $4.8 billion, a 25% drop from the first half of 2024. This downturn is characterized by the absence of large-ticket transactions (deals over $50 million) and a shift towards smaller, more cautious bets.

Several factors contribute to this overall funding contraction:

  • Investor Caution: High-profile failures and governance issues have made investors more circumspect, leading to stricter due diligence and a preference for startups with clear paths to profitability.
  • Macroeconomic Uncertainty: Global economic challenges, including rising interest rates, have tightened capital flow, impacting investments in emerging markets like India.
  • Shift in Investor Strategy: Investors are now prioritizing proven business models, sustainable unit economics, and profitability over aggressive growth-at-all-costs strategies that characterized earlier years.
  • AI Investment Gap: While the US VC landscape sees massive bets on AI startups, India has yet to experience a comparable surge in AI investment.

Underlying Strength and Innovation in Fitness Tech

Despite the funding challenges, the fitness tech sector itself exhibits strong underlying trends. Industry experts like Neha Singh, Co-Founder of Tracxn, note that India’s Fitness Tech ecosystem is entering a phase of steady maturity. This is driven by increasing health awareness, supportive policy initiatives, and rapid digital adoption. Startups continue to innovate with AI-driven nutrition, connected equipment, wearables, and immersive platforms.

Key trends emerging in the fitness industry for 2025 include:

  • Wearable Fitness Technology: The market is growing, with devices offering advanced insights into recovery, stress, and sleep patterns, driving personalized workout plans and health coaching.
  • Hybrid Fitness Models: Combining digital and in-person workout options continues to gain traction, offering flexibility and expanding revenue streams.
  • Personalization through AI: AI-driven solutions for workout plans, diet recommendations, and progress tracking are becoming crucial differentiators, improving user retention.
  • Holistic Health and Wellness: Businesses are expanding offerings to include nutrition counseling, mental wellness programs, and recovery services, reflecting a broader consumer demand for overall well-being.

Future Outlook for India’s Fitness Tech

While 2025 YTD funding figures indicate a significant cooling from the boom years, the long-term outlook for India’s fitness and wellness market remains positive. The overall fitness market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of approximately 15% and reach around INR 37,700 crore (US$4.5 billion) by 2030. This growth is expected to be fueled by an increasing number of new members, new center openings, and a rise in demand for personal training services.

Investors, while cautious, continue to see strong long-term potential in the sector, particularly in companies demonstrating resilience and a clear path to profitability. The current period of measured investment may lead to a more sustainable and mature ecosystem in the long run, with a focus on value creation rather than solely rapid growth.
