Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? The viral sensation that swept across social media in 2014 is back, but this time with a focus on a different, yet equally important, cause: mental health awareness.

From ALS to Mental Health: A Decade Later

The original Ice Bucket Challenge took the world by storm, raising over $220 million for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) research and treatment. Celebrities, athletes, and everyday people alike dumped buckets of ice water over their heads, challenging others to do the same and donate to the cause.

Now, a decade later, the challenge has been revived by students at the University of South Carolina’s Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) club. Dubbed the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge, this new iteration aims to raise awareness for mental health and funds for Active Minds, a non-profit organization focused on youth mental health issues.

Why Mental Health?

The shift in focus to mental health comes at a crucial time. According to a 2022 report by the National Library of Medicine, nearly 20% of children and youth aged three to 17 in the U.S. struggle with a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. This crisis has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, making mental health challenges the leading cause of death and disability for this age group. Canada is seeing similar trends.

Wade Jefferson, the founder of MIND, started the club after losing two close friends to suicide. He envisioned the challenge as a way to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and make discussions about it more accessible, especially among young people.

How the #SpeakYourMIND Challenge Works

The new Ice Bucket Challenge follows a similar format to the original:

  1. Get Drenched: Film yourself (or have someone else film you) dumping a bucket of ice water over your head.
  2. Share Your Story: Post the video on social media, sharing a personal story or supportive message about mental health.
  3. Nominate Others: Tag friends and challenge them to participate within 24 hours.
  4. Donate: Contribute to Active Minds to support their work in promoting mental health awareness and providing resources for young people.

The campaign launched on Instagram in March 2025 and has already gained significant traction. Initially hoping to raise $500, Jefferson and his team have seen donations soar past $200,000.

Active Minds: Empowering Young People

Active Minds is a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization that empowers youth and young adults to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others, encourage help-seeking, and reduce stigma. They work to:

  • Increase Awareness: Provide information and resources about mental health to young people.
  • Reduce Stigma: Create a safe and supportive environment for young people to talk about mental health.
  • Promote Help-Seeking: Encourage young people to seek help when they need it.

Brett Curtis, the director of community fundraising with Active Minds, notes that a significant percentage of youth and adults don’t know how to speak with a friend about mental health. The #SpeakYourMIND challenge aims to change that by fostering open conversations and providing resources for support.

The ALS Association’s Support

Despite the shift in focus, the ALS Association has endorsed the Ice Bucket Challenge’s revival for mental health awareness. In an Instagram post, the organization stated that “Mental health impacts everyone, including people affected by ALS,” and expressed their support for the campaign’s evolution into broader mental health advocacy.

The ALS Association released a report on the 10th anniversary of the original Ice Bucket Challenge and shared that the funds raised by the peer-to-peer fundraising effort enabled key research findings, including the identification of several new genes associated with ALS risk.

Addressing Concerns

While the response to the new Ice Bucket Challenge has been largely positive, some have expressed concerns about shifting the focus away from ALS. However, proponents of the new challenge argue that mental health is an equally important issue that deserves attention and resources. They also emphasize that the ALS Association supports the campaign’s new mission and recognizes the importance of mental health for everyone, including those affected by ALS.

A Viral Movement for Good

The Ice Bucket Challenge’s revival for mental health awareness demonstrates the power of social media to raise awareness and funds for important causes. By combining a fun and engaging activity with a meaningful message, the #SpeakYourMIND challenge has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of young people struggling with mental health issues.

The challenge’s virality is evident in its geographic spread. It has become the fifth-most popular hashtag on TikTok in the United States, with thousands of posts using the #icebucketchallenge tag.

How You Can Get Involved

If you’re looking for a way to support mental health awareness, here’s how you can get involved in the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge:

  1. Accept the Challenge: If you’ve been nominated, grab a bucket, some ice water, and a friend, and get ready to get drenched!
  2. Share Your Story: Use your social media platform to share your personal experiences or messages of support for mental health.
  3. Nominate Others: Tag friends and challenge them to participate and spread the word.
  4. Donate to Active Minds: Contribute to Active Minds to support their vital work in promoting mental health awareness and providing resources for young people.
  5. Spread Awareness: Share information about mental health resources and encourage others to seek help when they need it.

By participating in the #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge, you can help break the stigma surrounding mental health, raise awareness for this important issue, and support the work of Active Minds in empowering young people to prioritize their mental well-being.

The Future of the Challenge

The Ice Bucket Challenge has proven to be a powerful tool for raising awareness and funds for important causes. As the #SpeakYourMIND challenge gains momentum, it has the potential to create a lasting impact on the way we talk about and address mental health. By fostering open conversations, promoting help-seeking, and supporting organizations like Active Minds, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world for those struggling with mental health issues.

The #SpeakYourMIND Ice Bucket Challenge is more than just a viral trend; it’s a movement that has the potential to transform the way we view and address mental health. By participating in this challenge, you can help make a difference in the lives of young people and create a more supportive and inclusive society for all.
