JACKSON, Miss. – Governor Tate Reeves today signed Executive Order 1589, officially reestablishing the Presidential Fitness Test for elementary, middle, and high school students across Mississippi. The move aims to combat rising rates of childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles, aligning with a broader national initiative.

Mississippi Joins National Push for Youth Fitness
Governor Reeves’ executive order follows a July 2025 directive from President Donald Trump, which reinstituted the Presidential Fitness Test nationwide and reestablished the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. President Trump’s order emphasized a commitment to “ending the childhood chronic disease epidemic” and fostering “strength, vitality, and excellence” in future generations.
The Presidential Fitness Test, which measures various aspects of physical fitness, was a staple in American schools for decades, beginning in 1966, before being discontinued in 2012. Its return is championed by officials who believe it will inspire young people to be more active and address what they describe as an obesity epidemic.

Addressing Obesity and Sedentary Lifestyles
In a statement, Governor Reeves echoed the national concerns, highlighting the detrimental effects of excessive screen time and processed foods on children’s health. He stated, “Students across the country are spending far too much time sitting around looking at screens and eating too much highly-processed junk food. We know that obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and poor nutrition lead to more negative health outcomes.”
Reeves emphasized the importance of encouraging physical activity and educating students on healthy eating habits to foster healthier adults. He affirmed Mississippi’s commitment to “build a healthier America.”

Implementation and Collaborative Efforts
Executive Order 1589 outlines a collaborative approach for the reintroduction of the fitness test. State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney is tasked with compiling a report that proposes evidence-based strategies and public information campaigns to address deficiencies in nutrition, diet, and exercise across the state.
Additionally, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Lance Evans is directed to work with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to develop a plan for reestablishing the Presidential Fitness Test in Mississippi schools. Both reports are due to Governor Reeves by June 30, 2026.
The Presidential Fitness Test is slated for implementation in Mississippi schools during the 2026-2027 academic year.
