Despite his imposing physique, actor Jason Momoa, star of the upcoming Apple TV+ series Chief of War, openly admits he dislikes traditional gym workouts. Momoa, known for his roles as Aquaman and Khal Drogo, maintains his impressive build through a unique fitness philosophy rooted in movement, adventure, and functional strength, rather than endless hours of weightlifting.

A Disdain for Traditional Gym Workouts

Jason Momoa’s approach to fitness often surprises fans given his roles, which frequently demand a towering and muscular presence. He candidly shares his aversion to the gym, stating he finds weightlifting “challenging” and prefers not to touch weights unless it’s a paid requirement for a role. He also famously joked that “climbing El Capitan would be easier than doing two hours of yoga” due to his tight hamstrings, though he acknowledges the importance of flexibility. This unconventional stance stems from a desire for workouts that feel natural and engaging, rather than monotonous.

Genetics and Functional Movement

Momoa attributes much of his natural size to his Hawaiian genetics, noting that “Hawaiians are big people.” His fitness philosophy prioritizes “movement, adventure, and real-world strength,” focusing on activities that challenge both his body and mind. He emphasizes functional movement and mobility, partly influenced by past injuries, including a broken femur and knee surgeries.

The ‘Chief of War’ Training Regimen

For Chief of War, a passion project where Momoa co-wrote, co-directs, and stars as the legendary Hawaiian warrior Ka’iana, his training has been intense and specific. The series, which depicts the unification of Hawaiian islands in the 18th century, required him to embody a historical figure described as “near 6 feet 5 inches in stature, and the muscular form of his limbs was of a Herculean appearance.” The show’s commitment to authenticity also involved training in the traditional Hawaiian combat form known as Lua.

Embracing AR-7 and Outdoor Activities

Momoa’s training for demanding roles often incorporates the AR-7 (Accelerated Results 7) method, developed by his trainer Eric Laciste for Conan the Barbarian. This method focuses on a quick pace and short rest periods between sets, allowing for intense, efficient workouts that build muscle and incorporate cardio.

Beyond structured routines, Momoa integrates a variety of dynamic and outdoor activities into his lifestyle:

  • Rock Climbing: This is a particular favorite, providing a full-body workout, building grip strength, and engaging his mind through problem-solving. He often shares videos of his bouldering sessions.
  • Bodyweight Exercises: Push-ups, pull-ups, and squats are staples, with Momoa sometimes doing 100 push-ups between tasks to stay engaged.
  • Boxing and Sparring: He enjoys boxing and sparring as a way to prepare for film roles, sometimes using resistance bands.
  • Water Sports: Surfing and swimming are preferred forms of exercise, targeting his core and providing a full-body workout. He also enjoys paddleboarding.
  • Kettlebells: Momoa utilizes kettlebells for core strength, fighting, and stunt work, even traveling with them.
  • Mountain Biking: He enjoys mountain biking, though filming schedules sometimes limit this activity.

Diet and Philosophy: Balance and Authenticity

Momoa’s diet mirrors his balanced approach to fitness, focusing on nutritious whole foods while allowing for indulgences. To maintain his size and energy for active roles, he consumes a protein-rich diet including fish, eggs, and meats, alongside complex carbohydrates like rice and vegetables. He has been seen to enjoy Guinness beer as a post-workout drink.

Ultimately, Momoa’s fitness philosophy is about longevity and functionality over vanity. He emphasizes training to feel good and to be able to perform rather than simply to look a certain way, acknowledging the risk of injury from excessive training. His focus on finding joy in movement and integrating physical activity into his life reflects a sustainable and authentic approach to maintaining his powerful physique.
