The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) has launched the world’s first Exercise & Depression Specialization™ to equip qualified exercise professionals with the skills and knowledge to support individuals experiencing depression through structured, supervised exercise programs. This innovative program addresses the growing need for accessible, sustainable, and effective mental health interventions by leveraging the power of movement.

The Critical Link Between Exercise and Mental Health

Mental illness affects millions of people worldwide, with depression being one of the most common and disabling conditions. It significantly impacts quality of life, daily functioning, and overall health. Exercise has long been recognized as a valuable tool in managing mental health, offering numerous benefits:

  • Reduced Symptoms: Exercise can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, improving mood, self-esteem, and cognitive function.
  • Improved Sleep: Regular physical activity can promote better sleep patterns, which are crucial for managing mood and overall well-being.
  • Stress Relief: Exercise helps reduce stress hormones and releases endorphins, natural mood boosters.
  • Social Interaction: Exercising with others provides opportunities for social connection and support, combating feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Increased Energy: Physical activity can increase energy levels and reduce fatigue, common symptoms of depression.

Research indicates that exercise can be as effective as antidepressants or psychotherapy for mild to moderate depression. The Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) recognizes exercise as a first-line treatment for these cases.

Addressing the Challenges of Exercise and Depression

While the benefits of exercise for mental health are clear, many individuals with depression face challenges in adopting and maintaining a regular exercise routine. Symptoms like fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and low motivation can make it difficult to get started and stay consistent. Additionally, co-occurring health conditions may require special considerations when developing exercise programs.

The CSEP Exercise & Depression Specialization™ aims to bridge this gap by providing exercise professionals with the necessary skills and confidence to work with clients with depression. The program emphasizes:

  • Understanding Depression: In-depth knowledge of depressive disorders, including symptoms, diagnoses, and evidence-based treatment options.
  • Practical Strategies: Empirically-informed behavior change strategies to support clients in adopting and maintaining exercise habits.
  • Tailored Exercise Prescription: Skills to develop individualized exercise programs that address the specific needs and challenges of individuals with depression, including those with co-occurring health conditions.
  • Mental Health Literacy: Training in concepts like stigma, recovery-oriented practice, mental illness, and supportive strategies.

The CSEP Exercise & Depression Specialization™ Program

The CSEP Exercise & Depression Specialization™ is a comprehensive program designed for qualified exercise professionals seeking to expand their expertise in mental health. The program includes:

  • 40 hours of self-paced learning: Video, audio, reflection exercises, and applied learning activities.
  • Multimedia training: Combines empathy-building, professional communication, and applied programming.
  • Recognition by CANMAT: As a treatment-aligned credential.

The specialization is developed to increase exercise professionals’ confidence in working with clients with depression. The program was developed with expertise from UBC Kinesiology faculty, including Dr. Madelaine Gierc (PhD Clinical Psychology) and Dr. Guy Faulkner (PhD Exercise Psychology), both of whom are leaders in the intersection of physical activity and mental health. The development was supported by funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and a Michael Smith Health Research BC Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant.

Program Content:

The course materials provide an in-depth overview of depressive disorders, including symptoms, diagnoses, and evidence-based treatment options. The course materials provide practical strategies to support clients with depression, including empirically-informed behaviour change strategies, how to promote other movement behaviours, professional practice & ethics.
