Cruises are synonymous with indulgence. Unlimited buffets, exotic cocktails, and decadent desserts beckon at every turn. The mere thought of maintaining a healthy routine, let alone avoiding weight gain, can seem like a pipe dream. Yet, it’s entirely possible to enjoy all the culinary delights a cruise offers without sacrificing your well-being. I recently returned from a cruise where I ate and drank what I wanted, all while maintaining my routine and avoiding the dreaded vacation weight gain. Here’s how I did it.

Planning and Preparation

Setting Intentions

Before setting sail, I established clear intentions. I wasn’t aiming to restrict myself, but rather to make mindful choices that allowed me to enjoy the experience without derailing my fitness goals. This involved mentally preparing for the constant availability of food and drinks and resolving to approach each day with a balanced mindset.

Pre-Cruise Health Habits

Maintaining my regular exercise and eating habits in the weeks leading up to the cruise was crucial. This ensured I boarded the ship feeling my best and set a positive tone for the vacation. I also focused on hydration, knowing it would be essential to combat the effects of sun, rich foods, and cocktails.

The Buffet Strategy

Many cruise lines now feature “spa” menus with lighter fare, and chefs are often willing to accommodate special requests.

The Power of Protein and Fiber

At each meal, I focused on incorporating protein and fiber. Lean meats, fish, beans, and Greek yogurt provided sustained energy and helped me feel full longer. Fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains aided digestion and prevented overeating.

Hydration is Key

I made it a point to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps to curb appetite, aids digestion, and keeps you feeling energized. I also limited my consumption of sugary drinks, which can quickly add up in terms of calories. I aimed to have a glass of water between alcoholic drinks.

Staying Active on Board

Utilizing the Fitness Center

Most cruise ships have well-equipped fitness centers with treadmills, ellipticals, weights, and other exercise equipment. I made it a priority to visit the gym for at least 30 minutes each day. This helped me burn calories, boost my energy levels, and maintain my fitness routine.

Embracing Onboard Activities

Beyond the gym, cruise ships offer a plethora of opportunities to stay active. Swimming in the pool, taking a dance class, playing deck sports, and even walking around the ship can contribute to your daily activity levels. I made use of the jogging track.

Taking the Stairs

One of the simplest ways to increase physical activity on a cruise ship is to take the stairs instead of the elevator. This seemingly small change can make a significant difference over the course of a week.

Active Excursions

I chose shore excursions that involved physical activity, such as walking tours, hiking trips, and water sports. These activities allowed me to explore new destinations while burning calories and enjoying the outdoors.

Smart Drinking Strategies

Moderation is Paramount

Alcoholic beverages can be a significant source of empty calories on a cruise. I practiced moderation by limiting myself to one or two drinks per day and choosing lower-calorie options like wine or light beer.

Avoiding Sugary Cocktails

I steered clear of sugary cocktails, which are often loaded with calories and can lead to weight gain. Instead, I opted for simpler drinks like vodka with soda water and a squeeze of lime or a glass of dry wine.

Drinking Water Between Drinks

To stay hydrated and avoid overindulging, I made sure to drink a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. This helped me pace myself and make more mindful choices.

Maintaining a Routine

Prioritizing Sleep

Adequate sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy routine on a cruise. I aimed to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night to support my energy levels, mood, and overall well-being.

Staying Consistent

I tried to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on vacation. This helped regulate my body’s natural rhythms and made it easier to stick to my fitness and eating goals.

Practicing Mindfulness

Throughout the cruise, I practiced mindfulness by paying attention to my body’s signals and making conscious choices. I asked myself if I was truly hungry before reaching for a snack and savored each bite of my meals.

The Mental Game

Ditching the “All or Nothing” Mentality

One of the biggest mistakes people make on cruises is adopting an “all or nothing” mentality. They either restrict themselves completely or throw caution to the wind and indulge in everything. I found that a more balanced approach was more sustainable and enjoyable.

Forgiving Myself

If I occasionally indulged in an unhealthy treat or skipped a workout, I didn’t beat myself up about it. Instead, I simply acknowledged it and moved on, focusing on making healthier choices in the next moment.

I focused on the positive aspects of my cruise experience, such as the beautiful scenery, the fun activities, and the time spent with loved ones. This helped me stay motivated and avoid feeling deprived.
