Melbourne, Australia – Novak Djokovic has expressed concerns about his physical condition after a hard-fought victory against Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarter-finals. The 37-year-old Serbian tennis legend battled through a leg injury to defeat the young Spaniard in four sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in a match that stretched late into the night. Despite the win, Djokovic admitted he was “concerned” about his fitness heading into the semi-finals.

Injury Scare During First Set

Djokovic’s match against Alcaraz started with a setback. He appeared to injure his left leg during the first set, wincing and reaching for his thigh after a long rally. This led to a medical timeout where he received treatment off the court. When he returned, his left thigh was heavily strapped. Commentators noted he seemed to be struggling, and his movement appeared restricted. Despite this apparent disadvantage, he managed to fight back after losing the first set.

A Grueling Battle

The match was a physically demanding contest, with both players showcasing their incredible skill. Djokovic, despite his injury, managed to raise his game, displaying the resilience and mental fortitude that has defined his career. However, the injury continued to plague him, with Djokovic admitting he needed to take painkillers during the match to manage the pain. He stated that he even considered retiring from the match if he had lost the second set.

Recovery a Priority

Following the match, Djokovic emphasized that recovery was his immediate priority. He stated that he would be taking it “day by day” and would be working closely with his recovery team to assess his condition. Djokovic also said he would likely skip training to focus on recuperating. The Serbian’s concerns about his leg injury are not new. He has admitted that this injury is similar to the hamstring tear he sustained in 2023, an injury which did not stop him from winning the tournament that year.

“One of the Most Epic Matches”

Despite the physical struggles, Djokovic described the match as “one of the most epic matches I’ve played on this court”. He also added that he wished the match was the final. His determination to win his 11th Australian Open title was clearly evident, even as he battled through physical discomfort.

Semi-final Clash with Zverev

Djokovic’s victory over Alcaraz sets up a semi-final clash with second seed Alexander Zverev. The Serbian has a relatively short turnaround to recover, with the match scheduled for Thursday. Given his admitted fitness concerns, it remains to be seen how well Djokovic can recover in time for the next match.

Mental Strength

While physically concerned, Djokovic maintains that he is mentally and emotionally ready for the next challenge. He stated, “if I manage somehow to be physically good enough, I think mentally, emotionally, I’m as motivated as I can be.” Djokovic’s ability to compartmentalize his physical struggles from his mental game could prove crucial in his semi-final match.

Djokovic and Murray’s Growing Partnership

After securing the win against Alcaraz, Djokovic went straight to his coach Andy Murray. He described the moment as a “gesture of appreciation and respect” and emphasized the growing connection between them. The Serbian stated that he feels “more and more connected with Andy every day”. He acknowledged the commitment and support Murray has provided to his team during the tournament. Djokovic called the win a “huge win for all of us” including himself and Murray.

A Vintage Performance

Despite the injury concerns, Djokovic showcased a vintage performance against Alcaraz. He displayed excellent ball-striking and managed to maintain his unbeaten record on hard courts against the Spaniard. The victory extended his lead in the head-to-head series against Alcaraz to 5-3. This victory marks Djokovic’s 50th Grand Slam semi-final appearance, further solidifying his legendary status.

Looking Ahead

Djokovic’s performance at the Australian Open has once again demonstrated his exceptional skill and unwavering determination. However, his fitness concerns loom large as he approaches the semi-finals. It is a race against time for the Serbian to recover and be ready for the next challenge. He hopes that his prior experience of playing with a similar injury will help him manage the issue.

Tournament Schedule

Djokovic has indicated that he intends to play more events in 2025 than he did in the previous season. However, he has also emphasized the importance of managing his schedule, particularly after the Australian Open, to ensure he peaks at the biggest tournaments. He plans to participate in the Doha tournament and is considering playing in Indian Wells and Miami, if his physical condition allows.

A Thrilling Tournament

The 2025 Australian Open continues to deliver thrilling matches and captivating storylines. Djokovic’s battle with Alcaraz will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of the tournament. With the semi-finals fast approaching, tennis fans around the world will be eagerly watching to see how Djokovic manages his injury and what unfolds next.
